I'm pretty sure I'm not alone in my preferred ways of communicating these days: I text first, email second, call third, and handwrite a note almost never. During these times it's incredible to have resources at our fingertips such as Zoom, Skype, Facetime, WhatsApp, etc. but that does not mean we should forget about other forms of communication. People cannot keep a Skype call on their mantel and a text in a box of memories to save for later. A handwritten note is still an impactful way to touch those around you. Below are a few ideas to get you going.
Who Should You Write To?
Your Family
Think beyond your parents. What about the aunt or cousin that might be a bit lonely right now?
Your Friends
What better way to strengthen a bond than a note? You could share a funny story, reflect on something from the past, or just let them know you miss them.
Your Sphere
Anyone can touch base with a past client through an automated bulk email but not just anyone will pick up a pen to ask them how they are and if you can help in any way.
What Should You Write?
Write about what makes you comfortable and what flows naturally! That could be any of the below.

Just a check-in: Ask them how they are and mention that you are thinking of them.

Congratulate them on something recent: a move, a new baby, a new grandchild, a new job.

Thank them! Maybe you forget to say thank you for a favor recently or a gift received.

Ask them if there is anything that you can do to help them or suggest you are there for them anytime they need to talk.

Write a funny joke

Wish them a happy birthday, Mother's Day, Father's Day, Memorial Day, etc.Include a favorite poem.

Make a doodle or, better yet, have your child draw something.

State how much they mean to you and what impact they've had in your life, this one isn't for everyone but this will have the biggest impact! My mom just pulled the card out from my wedding day yesterday and reread it to me. I wax on about how she makes me who I am.

All else fails? Buy a greeting card and let them do most of the work! Just make sure to at least sign your name.
Make It Fun!

Include your kids and make craft time out of it. This has the added benefit of demonstrating to your children how important it is to stay connected to those we care about.

Get out all your favorite pens and good paper. When else are you going to use it?

Buy new pens and paper to inspire you. Deals are plenty out there from everywhere from Michael's to Papersource to Target.
